"I" is the project based name of Sweden's dub/microhouse/electronic producer Erik Möller who in the course of 10 years has been on the top electronic & deep house labels in the world. He was also nominated for a Swedish Grammy award for his very ambitious critically acclaimed self released CD "Rebel Swing" Among his many guises, his "Unai" pseudonym has lead him to Germany's most acclaimed labels such as Force Tracks, Sub-Static & Ware. His songs have appeared on astralwerks release of Naked Music's, "Lost On Arrival" vinyl & cd compilations. With his new " I " project Erik and close friends are set to create the future sound of electronic music. His most recent album, “A Love Moderne”, on Germany's ubiquitous Forcetracks label was just featured in The New York Times naming it, "the earliest contender for album of the year" .
This is the second single culled from the forthcoming, "One Word" album due out later this year. It draws upon both "Vocal City" era Luomo and equal parts Rhythm & Sound and his hybrid of pop-house-dub-fusion. Throughout "Small Words" Møller strikes a balance between haunting vocals (à la Luomo), breathtaking melodies & glitchy fragmented instruments which evolve into an exquisitely melancholy house-borne love ballad.
First up on this release is a remix by Möller himself under his Unai guise during which he serves up a pleasant 8 minute journey of frigid tech-dub only to have the song melt away into gorgeous melodic funk which is certain to impress fans of Metro Area. On the flip-side we have a mix by Chicago's Soultek who balances Unai's wistful vocals with fractured dub, funky slap bass (reminiscent of Matthew Herbert's earlier productions) & the most contagious hooks you'll ever hear. Closing things off is Detroit's Echospace who provides an extended journey through cavernous echoes, delicious bass and impeccable dub aesthetics. This is the type of memorable future-electronics we've come to expect from Sweden's most acclaimed electronic producer. To miss "Small Words" would be to miss one of the year's most sophisticated and intricate dance-pop outings.
What they are saying about the I project:
• "The minimalism of the Unai sound lies within the sparse, but tight bass line. For those about to funk, Unai salutes you as well as soothes you with his nice combination of Jamaican melody and tech-house sensibility." - Free Williamsburg
• "Unai dabbles in the kind of neo-romanticism exploited by Present Lover-era Luomo, Junior Boys, and Superpitcher's full-length work. Plaintive lyrics about lost love, a perpetual kick drum, and electro sheen" - Exclaim!
• "a motorik carwash of crisp synths and warbly basslines, while tossing up the icy, melodic phrases that have been shorthand for "techno heartbreaker" ever since "The Present Lover". Needless to say, fans of Luomo will find lots to like here. - Pitchfork
• Number 1 pick in XLR8R, sensational reviews and press in Earplug, Pop Matters, Pitchfork, BPM & URB, artist feature in De:Bug, Groove & The New York Times.
